Alabama State University Application
The Facts
Alabama State University is a moderately sized, public, state school located in the city of Montgomery, Alabama, and is home to over 4,200 undergraduate students and approximately 1,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The university is actually divided up into several smaller undergraduate colleges including schools of biological science, business, communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, as well as social science. The school was founded in 1867 as a Southern haven for intellectuals, and remains such an institution to this day. Alabama State University is perhaps best known for its innovative aerospace program that has yielded some of NASA's best and brightest engineers and mission control workers. ASU offers its students a wide variety of majors within its six undergraduate schools and one graduate school; some of the most popular among students include majors in the areas of business, education, criminal justice, computer informations systems, and elementary education.
Admission to Alabama State University is not terrifically competitive, however, if you are applying from out of state, you can expect to receive a lot of competition from in-state students who may retain ASU as their only option. Last year, over 3,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 2,100 of those students were admitted; of those, about 840 enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 980 to 1050, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging form 18 to 24. Additionally, over 40% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.1.
Alabama State University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 18 to 1, however, for such a comparatively small school, this ratio isn’t top notch. Most of the introductory classes are quite large, and many students complain that they feel totally anonymous. Many professors understand and often share their students’ sentiments, so they often keep long office hours, and are willing to speak with students that may need assistance or have a question or two.
The Social Scene
The city of Montgomery is rather small, but it does have some great cultural attractions such as concerts and museums, and contains several bars and coffee shops. Most students, however, prefer to hang out on campus, where there are plenty of social options. Greek life is a big factor on campus, and over 15% of the student population belongs to either a fraternity or a sorority. The Greeks often throw the best and most popular parties on campus, where drinking is definitely a popular mode of social interaction. The school is also home to over 50 student-run clubs and organizations; students can get involved in everything from musical theater to the local TV or radio station. ASU also has both varsity and intramural sports, and recently, the school built state-of-the-art athletic facilities to house its rapidly growing programs.
The dating scene is an interesting one; ASU has a great mix of international students who have that whole “exotic” thing going for them, and of course there are plenty of classic corn-fed Southern beauties... what do you have to lose?
What’s Good
“Even though it’s a major state and research university, it’s pretty small, so you feel like you’re part of a close-knit community here.”
“The party scene is great. No one is really excluded from any social event. Posters are just put up everywhere, inviting whomever wants to come.”
“The professors have an awesome open-door policy. I know I can go talk to them about anything.”
What’s Bad
“Sometimes I wish the school was a bit bigger. It’s kind of weird to go to a state school that’s this tiny. I feel like I know everyone, and there’s no one new to meet.”
“If you don’t like partying and kegging, there isn’t a whole lot for you to do here besides sit in your room and twiddle your thumbs.”
“The dorms are TINY, and there’s only a limited number of them. Off-campus housing at a decent price is a hard thing to find as well.”
