Albertus Magnus College Application
The Facts
Albertus Magnus College is a small, private college affiliated with the Roman Catholic church, located in the town of New Haven, Connecticut (yes, the same New Haven Yale University is in...) and is home to over 1,600 undergraduate students and approximately 500 graduate and part-time professional students. The school was founded in 1925 by the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs as a place for students to study the liberal arts while being given a chance to grow and learn spiritually in addition to intellectually. The college is divided into two different programs; one in the liberal arts and sciences, and one in business. The two programs offer degrees in the broad areas of biological science, business, communications and the arts, computer and physical science, health professions (including a unique art therapy program) as well as the social sciences (which includes a renowned and hard to find program in industrial and organizational psychology). The school doesn’t have a very large selection of majors, but the ones they do offer are quite specialized and intensive. Some of the most popular with students are in the areas of liberal arts, business, computer technology, economics, sociology, and psychology.
Admission to Albertus Magnus College is not competitive in the least numerically, however, those who do apply are usually quite self-motivated, and are seeking an intensive liberal arts education. Last year, just over 540 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 504 of those students were accepted; of those, about 135 actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1000 to 1050, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 19 to 25. Additionally, more than 45% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.5.
Albertus Magnus College has a rather dismal student to faculty ratio of 40:1, which is pretty astounding considering the school is so miniscule. However, many teachers do double, triple, or even quadruple duty in order to keep class sizes small. In fact, it is quite rare to find a class with more than 25 students, particularly in the more advanced courses. Students usually rave about their professors, and know they are extremely dedicated to their students; students feel like their teachers actually care not only about their academic development, but also about their general well-being.
The Social Scene
New Haven is a rather industrial town that isn’t particularly safe, even though Yale University is also located within its city limits. There are some popular student hangouts that have sprung up as a result of the schools, however, they are limited, and most students prefer to take a brief and inexpensive train ride to New York City for the weekends. There are no fraternities or sororities at the school, but there are over 20 student run clubs and organizations that run the gamut from a literary magazine to a musical theater society. There are also 50 intercollegiate sports teams at AMC, as well as some wonderful athletic facilities including an Olympic size pool and a track and field stadium.
The dating scene is rather dull if you stay within the AMC community, however, there are plenty of Yale parties to attend, and plenty of people to mingle with...
What’s Good
“The small atmosphere is wonderful. You get such a unique opportunity to really be involved in campus life, and to get your voice heard.”
“The professors are extremely dedicated here; many of them teach way more classes than they should have to, simply because they love it.”
“You get all the pleasures of weekends in New York City without any of the constant stresses of actually living and studying there.”
What’s Bad
“New Haven is not the best place to be; you don’t ever feel safe when you’re walking around, and there isn’t really anything to do.”
“The school is just way too small, and there are some people here that aren’t very motivated. They just want to skate right through.”
“The college is smaller than my high school, which isn’t really a good thing in this case.”
