The Facts
Allegheny College is a small liberal arts college located in the town of Meadville, Pennsylvania and is actually one of the oldest colleges in the nation. It is home to approximately 1,808 undergraduate students, and is perhaps best known for its unconventional education styles and the individual attention it lavishes on its students. The school is actually divided up into three smaller academic divisions; humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. The school offers a wide range of majors; some of the most popular with students are economics, psychology, political science, English language and literature, and biology.
Admission to Allegheny College is not terrifically competitive as the applicant pool is not terribly large, but the standards for admission are quite high. Last year, over 2,500 students applied for admission, and approximately 2,000 were accepted; of those, about 250 students enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1090 to 1300 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 28.
Furthermore, over 72% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.84.

For many, teaching is actually their only job, so they are extremely engrossed in the educational process and their roles as professors and mentors.
The Social Scene
The town of Meadville is pretty small, but the residents of the town are apparently really friendly to the students, and have embraced Meadville's status as a college town. There are several bars, cafes, and clubs that many students frequent. Also, a lot of the students own cars, so on the weekends they are able to go to the nearby cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
There are many Greek houses at Allegheny College, and many students choose to join one of the numerous fraternities and sororities on campus. The houses do throw many parties, particularly on the weekends, however, they are also quite involved in community service.
The students are quite a self-motivated bunch, and there are over 100 student-run clubs and organizations that are quite popular with the student population.
