Anderson University Undergraduate Program
Anderson University Application
The Facts
Anderson University is a small, private liberal arts institution located in the town of Anderson, Indiana, and is affiliated with the Church of God. The university is home to over 2,000 undergraduate students and approximately 300 graduate and part-time professional students, who are able to take courses in one of the university’s three undergraduate or three graduate schools. The schools offer academic programs in the areas of theoretical and applied science, social and professional studies, arts, culture, and religion. These academic programs offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business (which includes a unique program in sports management), communications and the arts (which has a wonderful graphic design program), education, health professions, and social sciences. Anderson University offers its students a fairly wide range of majors in both the liberal arts as well as preprofessional studies; some of the most popular majors are in physical sciences, business, education and music.
Admission to Anderson University isn’t competitive; a vast majority of the students who apply are accepted. Last year, over 1,000 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 980 of those students were accepted; about 520 of the admitted students enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 990 to 1080, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 26. Additionally, more than 60% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.45.
Anderson University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 14:1, and it is rare to find a class at any level with more than 16 students. Lecture courses are basically nonexistent, which makes students understandably enthusiastic. In general, students give their professors high marks in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out, although some do report feeling a but snubbed on occasion.
The Social Scene
The town of Anderson itself is basically a suburb of the city of Indianapolis, which is about 40 miles away. The immediate area around campus is typically suburban, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment. However, most students own cars, and head into Indianapolis on the weekends to take advantage of its cultural and social offerings, including museums, theatre, dance, concerts of all types, galleries, restaurants, bars, clubs and shopping. Indianapolis is a surprisingly cosmopolitan place, and students love it. Anderson University has no fraternities or sororities, but most students seem to be quite happy about their absence. The school does boast over 41 student groups and organizations that run the gamut from choir to a school newspaper run and staffed entirely by students.
The school is pretty small, and the dating scene is relatively homogenous, but there are plenty of earnest students who would be happy to go on a date or two...
What’s Good
“The school has a very cozy atmosphere that really fosters academics and intellectualism. It’s a nice place.”
“The professors and even the administration are really personable, and it’s obvious they care about us.”
“If you get bored of campus, Indianapolis is only about 40 minutes away by car. It’s a great town.”
What’s Bad
“Because we have no Greek organizations, the party life is pretty deflated. It would be nice to get a little crazy sometimes.”
“Anderson has nothing to do. And the drive into the city can be a little too hectic to be worth it sometimes.”
“Sometimes the religious affiliation of the school seeps into classes, which can feel kind of inappropriate sometimes.”
