Antioch College Admission
Antioch College Undergraduate Program
Antioch College Application
The Facts
Antioch College is a tiny liberal arts college located in the small town of Yellow Springs, Ohio. It is home to a mere 571 undergraduate students, and only 10 graduate students. The school is incredibly unique, as it runs on a distinctive co-op system, where students are required to complete five real-world work experiences during their time at Antioch . They will study for a few months on campus, then take some "time off” to work in an area related to their major. Students are closely watched and guided by an advisor from the faculty, who make sure they are placed in the correct situation. Advisors also help students to build their resumes and apply to their desired positions, in addition to helping them with the paper and/or project they must complete by the end of their co-op experience.
Admission to Antioch is not terrifically competitive, but those who do apply tend to be extraordinarily self-motivated and ambitious. Last year, only 467 students applied for admission and approximately 348 students were accepted; about 144 students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1100 to 1400 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 26- 30. Over 56% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.57.
Students at Antioch don't have much free time. While there aren't really many requirements at Antioch, students are heavily immersed in exploring various fields and majors. Some of the most popular majors and concentrations with students include majors in cultural and interdisciplinary studies, environmental and biological sciences, the arts, various self-designed majors, and languages, literature, and culture. Students have a lot of freedom at Antioch , and they make their time at the college what they want it to be.
The Social Scene
Yellow Springs can barely be called a town, and students sometimes complain that there isn't enough excitement. However, the town is full of neo-hippies and militant vegans, so the town offers many cute natural health stores and good vegetarian cafes and restaurants. The town is situated in a beautiful and very natural area with plenty of surrounding woods and green spaces. Most students at Antioch are fervent nature lovers, and love to hike, camp, and boat on the weekends, if they have time.
There are no fraternities or sororities at Antioch, and because many students are often off-campus working at their co-op internships, there isn't much of a consistent social scene. However, students do find ways to have fun. There are many dorm parties with lots of drinking and pot-smoking, however, many students prefer to hang out in small groups instead.
The student body is incredibly politically active, and there are often protests and rallies for students to take part in. The dating scene at Antioch is pretty crazy; expect anarchists and capitalists alike who will take you on dates that are anything but conventional.
What’s Good
“The community here manages to be pretty tight, even with all those people off-campus all the time.”
“The town is really cute, and the residents are really accepting of college students. They love to talk culture and politics with us.”
“The academics here are so open, and you can really make your education what you want it to be.”
What’s Bad
“The school is so small that it can tend to feel way too intimate; everyone always has their nose in everyone else's business.”
“There isn't enough structure here. You have no idea what to do sometimes.”
“The social scene really sucks here; there are never any big get-togethers or bashes and it doesn't really feel like college.”
