The Facts

Auburn University is a moderately-sized public school located in the town of Auburn, Alabama, and is home to approximately 17,572 undergraduate students and about 3,900 graduate and part-time students. The university is divided into several smaller undergraduate colleges, including schools of agriculture, education, engineering, forestry, human sciences, liberal arts, nursing, pharmacy, sciences, and mathematics. The school is known for its fantastic research departments, as well as its unique school of veterinary medicine. The school offers a wide range of majors; some of the most popular with students are in the areas of business, engineering, education, health sciences, and psychology.

As a large state school, Auburn does not have terribly competitive admission standards; however, they have recently raised the bar for applicants, and every year, more and more qualified students apply. Last year, approximately 12,500 students applied for admission and about 9,700 were accepted; 3,706 students enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1030 to 1220, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 27. Over 54% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.51.

Even though the school is quite large, the administration does everything they can to keep the class sizes relatively manageable. The school has a student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and most of the core curriculum classes have no more than 25 students. However, there are some larger lecture size classes such as the Freshmen History course. In general however, students say that their teachers are remarkably accessible and willing to help out whenever students request.

The Social Scene

The town of Auburn is small, however, the residents of the town are extraordinarily welcoming to Auburn U students. The town does have a wide array of cafes, bars, clubs, shops and restaurants, so students are never at a total loss for activities. Auburn is known for being somewhat of a party school, and the overwhelming presence of fraternities and sororities on campus is a testament to that reputation. Students love to drink, drink, and drink on the weekends and even the weeknights, and the Greek houses often throw massive keggers that are always a popular activity.

Sports are also a big deal at this school, and the Tiger Football Team is a much beloved entity of the school. In fact, both Charles Barkley and Bo Jackson played for the team. Many students love nothing more than to tailgate and then head off to support the Tigers, who have been quite successful in recent years.

Judging by the extremely friendly atmosphere at Auburn, we would say that the dating scene is flourishing and there is never a lack of potential dates. Just sit on a bench and let them come to you!

What’s Good

“People here are so incredibly friendly. It's nearly impossible to feel unwelcome here; both at the school and in the town.”

“The classes are usually quite small, and the teachers make sure you receive a lot of individual attention.”

“The school spirit here is fantastic. People really bond together in pride and support of this school.”

What’s Bad

“Auburn U is old, and the campus shows it. A lot of buildings need a lot of work.”

“The campus is a bit sketchy at night. It's not really that safe to walk around by yourself.”

“A lot of people here are really unmotivated. They could care less about their studies, and just come here to get drunk every night.”
