The Facts
Augusta State University is a moderately sized liberal arts and sciences university located in the town of Augusta, Georgia, and is home to over 4,000 undergraduate students and approximately 1,800 graduate and part-time professional students. The school is public, and part of the larger University System of Georgia. Augusta State is perhaps best known for its early childhood and middle school education programs, as well as for combining a solid liberal arts education with preprofessional programs and experience. Interestingly, the majority of students commute, which makes for a unique on-campus atmosphere. The university is divided up into several smaller undergraduate and graduate colleges, including schools of biological science, business, communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education and social science. ASU provides its students with a choice of numerous and varied majors; some of the most popular choices are in the areas of biology, early childhood education, and computer science.
Admission to Augusta State University is somewhat competitive, particularly among in-state students whose academic and extracurricular achievements are similar. Last year, over 1,725 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,100 of those students were accepted; of those, about 840 enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 980 to 1030, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 26. Additionally, more than 40% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating classes with an average GPA of about 3.5.
Augusta State University has a manageable student to faculty ratio of 18:1, however, there are many other small state schools that manage to keep this ratio quite a bit lower. While most of the general introductory courses are held in large lecture halls, more specific, upper-level courses tend to be significantly smaller, rarely containing more than 25 students.
The Social Scene
The town of Augusta is indeed urban, but doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment; however, the town has made an effort in recent years to more fully embrace its status as a college town, and several cute cafes and shops have opened up along the previously dull main drag. Greek life is a big factor on campus, and over 10% of students either belong to a fraternity or sorority. The Greek’s weekend parties are very popular among students, and are fueled by kegs and loud music. If you want a typical collegiate party experience, this would be it. For students interested in filling up their time with more wholesome activities, sports are also big at the school, and the baseball and golf teams have been quite successful in recent seasons.
The dating scene isn’t incredibly diverse or exciting, particularly because so many students are commuters, but keep a sharp eye...
What’s Good
“Those of us who aren’t commuters basically get the whole campus to ourselves on the weekends.”
“Atlanta is only a couple of hours away by car, and the nightlife scene there is amazing.”
“The professors here are phenomenal, and when you come in during office hours, they put all their focus on you.”
What’s Bad
“The campus can be really dull on the weekends because everyone basically leaves. It’s like a ghost town.”
“If you want any excitement at all, you have to hop in your car and drive two hours to Atlanta. Sometimes even longer with all the traffic.”
“People here tend to hang out in exclusive little cliques. If they don’t want you to join them, you’ll know it right away.”
