The Facts

Aurora University is a small private institution located in the town of Aurora, Illinois, and is home to over 1,500 undergraduate students and approximately 2,200 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take classes in one of the four undergraduate or four graduate schools, which offer programs in the areas of arts and sciences, education, business, information science, communication, nursing and health, recreation, social work, and a professional and staff program. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design (which includes a unique program in industrial management), health professions, and social science. Aurora University offers its students a pretty well-rounded platter of majors in both the liberal arts and preprofessional studies; some of the most popular choices are business, education, psychology, nursing, and Aurora's unique protective services major.

Admission to Aurora University is not that competitive, but there are some highly qualified students that apply each year. Last year, over 1,300 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 840 of those students were accepted; of those, about 330 enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1010 to 1080, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 25. Additionally, more than 65% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.

Aurora University has a fairly manageable student to faculty ratio of 23:1, however, there are many other schools of similarly diminutive size that manage to keep their ratios much lower. However, it is rare to find a class with more than 25 students, and usually, classes are discussion-based and held in a very hands-on learning environment. In general, students give their professors high marks in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out.

The Social Scene

The town of Aurora is quite suburban, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment; however, the vibrant city of Chicago is only about 40 miles east, and easily accessible by car (if you want to brave the traffic!). In fact, many students head into the city on the weekends to take advantage of its restaurants, museums, nightlife, and culture in general. Aurora University is home to 8 local and national fraternities and sororities, and many students join a Greek organization at some point during their college career. The Greeks have popular weekend parties that are the places to be on Saturday nights, and drinking is definitely the most popular mode of social interaction at these fetes.

The dating scene may be small, and not very diverse, but if you look long and hard enough, we hear there are many great dates to be had...

What’s Good

“The school is the absolute perfect size for me. It feels very cozy and familial here.”

“The professors are wonderful, and obviously really dedicated to their students.”

“The party scene rivals that of a larger state school. We really know how to have a good time here.”

What’s Bad

“The campus is way too small for me. Sometimes, a little bit of anonymity would be great.”

“There isn’t anything to do here if you don’t like partying, and if you don’t have a car to get out of town, good luck.”

“There are a lot of general education requirements, and it takes forever until you actually get to your major.”
