Austin College Application
The Facts
Austin College is a small, private liberal arts college located in the town of Sherman, Texas . The school is officially maintained by the Presbyterian Church, although students say that the religious influence isn't strongly felt, and it isn't mandatory that you be Presbyterian to attend. The school is home to approximately 1,300 undergraduate students and about 38 graduate and part-time students. The school offers a wide range of majors throughout many various programs; some of the most popular choices are business administration, psychology, biology, political science, and English. The college also has a noted pre-law program, as well as a rather prestigious international education program.
Admission to Austin College is not terrifically competitive, as the general applicant pool is quite small, however, the students that do apply are usually quite accomplished and have been academically successful in the past. Last year, just over 1,328 students applied for admission, and about 960 were accepted; about 338 of those accepted enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1138 to 1340, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 28. Furthermore, over 73% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.39.
Austin College has a great student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and most core curriculum classes don't have more than 20 students in them. The teachers at Austin are incredibly accomplished in their respective fields, and students say they often form close bonds during the course of a class that last well beyond its completion. An interesting note; the school offers a unique January term in which students must eventually complete three job internships during the course of their study. The school even has a partnership with several political factions in Washington, D.C., where many students choose to spend their January Term.
The Social Scene
The town of Sherman is quite small, and students say that the residents of the town aren't particularly welcoming to students. However, students also remark that if you have a car, the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth are only about an hour away. Most students do own cars, but it should be noted that parking on campus can be quite tricky.
There are many fraternities and sororities at Austin College, and they are extremely popular with students. They provide great meeting points for students, and are notorious for throwing rowdy, jubilant bashes 24-7. Many students do complain that the Greeks are way too cliquey, but it doesn't seem to keep students from showing up to their parties in droves.
The dating scene is actually quite diverse; there's everyone from true cowboys to true hippies.
