The Facts
Baker University is a fairly small, private institution located in the town of Baldwin City, Kansas, and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The school is home to over 1,000 undergraduate students and approximately 60 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in one of the university’s two undergraduate schools or one graduate school that offer programs in both arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies. The university’s academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science (home to a rather innovative program in wildlife biology), business (an always popular major with programs as diverse as accounting and international business management), communications and the arts (home to wonderful programs in art history and appreciation as well as studio art), computer and physical science (which includes a unique major in information science and systems), education, health professions (which includes only one major in nursing), and social sciences. Baker University offers its students a rather wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies; some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of biology, education, music, business, as well as psychology.
Admission to Baker University is not very competitive among the relatively few students who apply; however, the overall number of applicants has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 940 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 770 of those students were accepted; about 225 of the admitted students enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1100 to 1190 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 30. Additionally, more than 75% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.8.
Baker University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 17:1, and it is rare to find a class with more than 20 students. Lecture courses are very rarely held, and students agree that one of the best qualities of the school are the small class sizes. Professors also get high marks from students in terms of availability and willingness to help students out.
The Social Scene
The town of Baldwin City is actually quite small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, however Kansas City is only about a half an hour’s drive away, and many students own cars, making weekend excursions into the city a popular option. The school is home to 8 local and national fraternities and sororities which are quite popular with students, and consequently are a big influence on campus. The Greeks basically govern on campus social life, and their weekend parties are very popular with students both Greek and non-Greek. Drinking is definitely the most popular mode of social interaction at these soirees, and the administration seems to turn a fairly blind eye.
The dating scene isn’t terrifically diverse; however, the students are friendly with good looks to match...
What’s Good
“There is a wonderful community here; people are really supportive of each other and don’t feel the need to compete.”
“There is always something going on here; you don’t really have to worry about being bored.”
“The professors are hard on you, but they only do it because they really want you to succeed.”
What’s Bad
“There isn’t really anything to do off campus, and the traffic going into Kansas City is so bad that it just isn’t worth it to me.”
“Some of the general education courses are just reviews of high school stuff and a waste of time that could be spent on my major.”
“Some of the students here seem to think they’re still in high school, which is very very obnoxious.”
