Beloit College Undergraduate Program
Beloit College Application
The Facts
Beloit College is a small liberal arts college located in the small town of Beloit, Wisconsin . The college is home to approximately 1,226 undergraduate students, and the small size is a great asset that fosters the unique learning environment at Beloit . The college is perhaps best known for its fantastic science department, as well as its focus on international studies. The college does offer over 45 majors; some of the most popular choices are psychology, creative writing, sociology, history, and biology. Beloit also offers an extensive study abroad program, an opportunity which many students take advantage of.
Admission to the college is somewhat competitive, and those who apply tend to be very driven and have been academically successful in the past. Last year, approximately 2,000 students applied for admission and about 1,320 were accepted; of those, around 345 enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1130 to 1350, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 30. Furthermore, over 64% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.51.
The school has an impressive student to faculty ratio of a mere 11:1, and students say that their teachers are incredibly accessible. They will often hang around after class to listen to the students' concerns. Many of the professors are considered leading authorities in their respective fields, and offer students plenty of internship and research opportunities so students are able to get hands-on experience. “Learning by doing” could be Beloit's motto; students are able to tailor their learning experience by choosing to spend time dabbling in many various fields and really getting their hands dirty, so to speak.
The Social Scene
The town of Beloit is quite small, but the campus is absolutely beautiful with thick woods and plenty of open green spaces. There are even some ancient Native American animal mounds on the campus that been dated to about 700 A.D. Most students do own cars, and often head to the fairly nearby cities of Madison, Milwaukee, and even Chicago for some more entertainment options.
There is plenty of Greek life on campus, and they are rather infamous for throwing some pretty raucous and debauched bashes throughout the year. Many students partake in the drinking and drug culture, but if it isn't your thing, there are plenty of other ways to have fun on campus. There are tons of student run clubs and organizations that constantly have activities going. The clubs tend to be pretty offbeat, and include organizations such as “The Society for Creative Anachronisms” and the “Cigar Aficionado” club.
The dating scene is, well, different; expect many many different kinds of students. Let's just say it's a free-for-all.
