The Facts

Benedictine University is a rather small, private institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic church, and is located in the town of Lisle, Illinois. The university is home to over 1,500 undergraduate students and approximately 900 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the 3 undergraduate or 3 graduate schools, which offers academic programs primarily in the arts and sciences. The 6 total schools offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, (which includes a unique nutrition program) business, (home to an innovative program in organizational behavior) communications and the arts, (where students have the opportunity to major in publishing) computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, health professions, (home to an innovative program in nuclear medical technology) as well as the social sciences. Benedictine University offers its students a fairly wide range of majors for a school of its size, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of biology, management, as well as psychology.

Admission to Benedictine University is not particularly competitive numerically, however, those who do apply tend to have been very academically successful in the past. Last year, over 870 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 800 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 300 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1050 to 1090, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 29. Additionally, more than 66% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.68.

Benedictine University has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 22:1, however, for a school of such small stature, this ratio could be much better. However, class sizes are kept rather small, usually having less than 22 students, and many of the professors do double or triple duty in order to keep the class sizes down. Students rave about the dedication of their teachers, saying they always feel like they can go to them for help.

The Social Scene

The town of Lisle itself is basically a suburb of Chicago, even through it’s about 25 miles west of the city itself. Most students own cars, and make weekend trips into the city to experience its abundance of cultural and social offerings. Benedictine University has no fraternities or sororities, and the students would rather keep it that way. There are, however, over 40 student run clubs and organizations that run the gamut from an art club to a literary magazine. The clubs are an integral part of on campus life, and many students bide their time by participating in many of the student run activities offered by these groups. If you’re looking for a party school, this place isn’t it. The administration is very strict when it comes to drinking and drugs in general, and if they hear of any foul-play, you can expect to get the boot.

The dating scene is reportedly very laid back, and the school is full of wide-eyed sweethearts, waiting to take you on a candlelit dinner...

What’s Good

“I chose this school because I wanted to feel comfortable and taken care of, and so far, it’s lived up to all my expectations and beyond.”

“I really like that most of the activities that go on here are just fun, not to mention legal. You don’t have to worry about peer pressure.”

“I love all my professors. They really give you the sense that you’re cared for, and that they want you to succeed.”

What’s Bad

“I think everything here is just a little too quaint. I can’t deal with absolutely everyone knowing all my business.”

“If you plan on going into Chicago every weekend, you can plan on sitting in traffic every weekend.”

“I wish there was a party scene here, because as of now, there isn’t a single party planned. Ever.”
