Benedictine College Admission
Benedictine College Undergraduate Program
Benedictine College Application
The Facts
Benedictine College is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Atchison, Kansas, and is affiliated with the Catholic Benedictines. The college is home to over 1,000 undergraduate students and approximately 260 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies. The college’s academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, (home to a great program in biochemistry) business, (a popular major with programs as diverse as accounting and business management) communications and the arts, (home to wonderful programs in journalism, dramatic arts, as well as a unique program in theater management) computer and physical science, (which includes a rather innovative program in astronomy) education, (perhaps one of the college’s most popular programs) as well as the social sciences (which includes a unique and rather popular program in youth ministry). Benedictine College offers its students a fairly wide range of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of physical science, biology, history, education, as well as sociology.
Admission to Benedictine College is not terribly competitive among the relatively few students who apply, however, the overall number of students applying has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 580 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 550 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 255 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1030 to 1100 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 30. Additionally, more than 65% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.7.
Benedictine College has a fairly manageable student to faculty ratio of 18:1, however, there are many comparably sized private schools that manage to keep their number much lower. However, it is rare to find a class at any level with more than 15 or 16 students, and the professors make themselves readily available for assistance.
The Social Scene
The town of Atchison is quite small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, however, Kansas City is only about 45 minutes away by car, and many students head into the city on the weekends to take advantage of the more lucrative social offerings. The university also has quite a bit going on campus, including many student clubs and organizations that run the gamut from a musical theater organization to a school newspaper. The school has no Greek organizations, but most students seem to prefer it that way.
The dating scene may not be very diverse, but people are quite personable, and adorable to boot!
What’s Good
“It’s nice that we’re so close to Kansas City; you can take advantage of it without having the stress of actually living there.”
“The professors here are wonderful, and they make it very obvious that they care.”
“The student organizations are great, and people really want to get involved however they can.”
What’s Bad
“I really wish we had more of a party scene. The weekends can be pretty boring sometimes.”
“We’re kind of out in the middle of nowhere. It would be nice if we had some things to do in our own backyard.”
“There are a lot of people here from the same background and demographic; it gets kind of monotonous.”
