The Facts
Berry College is a rather small arts, sciences, and business college located in the town of Mount Berry, Georgia . The college is home to approximately 1,848 undergraduate students and about 150 graduate and part-time students. The college is divided up into several smaller undergraduate schools including the Campbell School of Business, the Charter School of Education and Human Sciences, the Evans School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. The school also has some unique partnerships with the Georgia Institute of Technology, Mercer University, and Emory University, where students are able to study both engineering and nursing. The college offers many undergraduate majors; some of the most popular choices include business administration, communication, early childhood education, psychology, and biology.
Admission to the school is only minimally competitive; however, the applicant pool tends to be made up of students that have been quite academically successful in the past. Last year, approximately 1,845 students applied for admission, and about 1,530 were accepted. Eventually however, only about 505 students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1070 to 1280, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 29. Over 69% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.64.
The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 12:1, and students say that their teachers are extremely devoted to those students who show an equal amount of devotion to their education. Students are really emphatic about the accessibility of their teachers, and say they are always reachable by email or phone to answer any questions.
The Social Scene
The town of Mount Berry is pretty small, and it isn't exactly the most diverse town on earth. There are a couple of bars and clubs that have student nights every once and awhile, but that's about the extent of excitement in the town. Most fun is to be had on campus, and students rave about the gorgeous natural surroundings. The campus consists of 28,000 acres and includes lakes, small mountains, and the entire campus itself is actually a wildlife refuge! Naturally, outdoor activities are the main source of fun, and students love to bike, swim, fish, hike, and even camp on the weekends.
Most students do own cars, and the more cosmopolitan cities of Atlanta and Chattanooga are only about an hour away by automobile, and many students make the trek on the weekends. The campus is officially dry, and there are no fraternities or sororities, but students say that there is a lot of drinking despite the rules against it.
The dating scene isn't incredibly diverse; expect to be picked up for your date in a Mercedes driven by a lad or a lass in Abercrombie and Fitch head to toe.
What’s Good
“People here are like one big family. We all have a lot of appreciation for the dedication of everyone here.”
“The housing is great, and many of the apartment- style dorms even have dishwashers.”
“The campus is amazing, and it is seriously one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. It puts things in perspective when the going gets rough.”
What’s Bad
“The campus is actually way too big; it ends up feeling way to sprawling, and it's pretty easy to get lost in the woods.”
“People are pretty snobby here. Most kids have a ton of money, and love to show it off in whatever way they can.”
“There is absolutely no diversity here. It is rare to see anyone who isn't white.”
