Bethel College Application

The Facts

Bethel College is a rather small, private liberal arts ande sciences institution located in the town of Mishawaka, Indiana, and is affiliated with the Missionary Church. The college is home to over 1,500 undergraduate students and approximately 500 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take classes in one of the college’s academic programs in both the liberal arts and sciences, as well as preprofessional studies. These academic programs offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, (home to an innovative program in environmental biology) business, (which includes a sought-after program in sports management) communications and the arts, (home to a surprisingly active fine arts community) computer and physical science, (which includes a new major in web technology, which is rapidly growing in popularity) education, engineering and environmental design, (home to a unique program in aeronautical engineering, as well as interior design) health professions, as well as the social sciences. Bethel College offers its students a wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of education, youth ministry, aeronautical engineering, sports management, music performance, as well as nursing.

Admission to Bethel College is not neccessarily competitive numerically, however, those who do apply tend to have been very academically successful in the past. Last year, over 470 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 443 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 300 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1060 to 1100 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 30. Additionally, more than 60% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.58.

Bethel College has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio, which isn’t terrible, however, there are many schools its size or even larger that manage to keep their numbers much lower. This doesn’t, however, seem to affect the overall class sizes, as most professors are full time, and teach multiple classes to keep them small.

The Social Scene

The town of Mishawaka is very suburban and family oriented, however, it is right next to South Bend, home to numerous colleges, including the large Notre Dame. Many of the students mingle, and parties often cross school borders, which students love, understandably. Chicago is also only about 90 minutes away by car, and many students head into the city on the weekends to soak up its plethora of charms. Bethel has no fraternities or sororities, but most students seem to prefer it that way.

The dating scene isn’t incredibly diverse at Bethel, but because there is so much mingling with students from other schools, there are plenty of chances off campus to meet people...

What’s Good

“I love that students here aren’t afraid to mingle with people from other universities. It makes life a lot more interesting.”

“The professors here obviously really love their jobs, and they make sure you know it.”

“The community here is really close, and you feel immediately included as soon as you arrive on campus.”

What’s Bad

“Our school doesn’t really have a distinctive identity. There’s absolutely no school spirit here.”

“There’s no partying here. You have to go over to Notre Dame for that.”

“For such a small school, the administration is pretty bureaucratic. It’s kind of difficult to get questions answered.”
