Clark University Application
The Facts
Clark University is a small, private university located in the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, and is home to approximately 1,994 undergraduate students and about 817 graduate students. The university puts a definite emphasis on research, but it also offers more creative students many other outlets, including several majors in the fine and performing arts. Clark is perhaps best known for its psychology department; in fact, the first I.Q. tests were actually developed at Clark, and the center of campus is graced with a large statue of
Sigmund Freud. The school offers a wide range of majors, some of the most popular choices are psychology (of course), government and international relations, biology, history, and communication and culture.
Admission to Clark U is not terrifically competitive; last year, approximately 3,950 students applied, and 2,488 students were admitted; of those, 541 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1090 to 1300 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 27. Over 69% of the admitted students were ranked
in the top 25% of their high school graduating class, and had an average high school GPA of 3.41.
Clark University has a manageable student to teacher ratio of 10:1, and students remark that their professors are quite accessible, and many of them are the top professionals in their respective fields. There are plenty of research and internship opportunities available to students, and they definitely take advantage of them. Some of the introductory level classes are a bit larger, but it is rare to find massive lectures. The core curriculum is quite flexible, and is centered almost exclusively in the liberal arts. An interesting note: students are able to get involved in an International Studies program, where they are able to supplement their main degree with classes covering the various facets of international studies and relations.
The Social Scene
The town of Worcester isn’t very college student friendly, and students say there isn’t a whole lot to do, and the town isn’t terribly safe. Perhaps this is why students at Clark are required to live on campus for their first two years at the university. There are no fraternities or sororities at the school, but this doesn’t seem to bother students. Clark is not known for being a party school, but students do throw the inevitable dorm party, and sometimes they do get a bit out of hand.
Sports are quite popular at the school, and many students get involved in the many intramural sports programs. There is also a multitude of student-run clubs and organizations, and students are constantly starting up their own groups.
The dating scene at Clark is reportedly quite vibrant; because there is nothing do to in the town, students find other ways to have fun... and you know what that means....
What’s Good

“People here are really intense about their academics, but they know how to let loose and have a good time.”
“The housing is great. They make sure that no one is left out in the cold, so to speak.”
What’s Bad
“There isn’t really a party scene here. It can be pretty boring sometimes.”
“People can get a bit too competitive here. The pressure can really get to you sometimes.”
“There are way too many core requirements here. It’s hard to have time to get to your major requirements.”
