Lines Aren't Always Bad

Brought to you by the Penn Group

If you go to school in an urban metropolis like I do, you will quickly learn that most of your waking day is spent waiting in lines. Lines for the subway, lines for tickets, lines at the grocery store, even lines to get into class. If you let them, lines can become the absolute and unrivaled bane of your existence. Sometimes, you feel like the only things you ever do are work, eat, sleep, and wait in lines, waiting in lines being the primary activity.

Up until a few months ago, waiting in lines was the bane of my existence as well. I deplored a long queue more than anything else. When I passed a line on the street, even if it had nothing to do with me, even if I didn’t have to wait in it, I would shudder, and pick up the pace. However, one chilly April evening, that all changed forever.

I was waiting in line with a friend from out of town who wanted to go see a very famous, very popular, therefore very very busy comedy show. Even though it was a biweekly event, from the length of the line, you would think it only occurred once a millennium. I had prepared this time, and brought a very warm parka, a stack of Vogue magazine, along with a very comfy folding chair. We got a place near the end of the line, and prepared for what was bound to be a very long wait.

As we sat down, I couldn’t help but notice that there was a very attractive guy sitting just in front of us in line. He was one of those bookish, raffish types who doesn’t have any idea that he is attractive to the opposite sex. I noticed he was writing in a little moleskin notebook, which was another big attraction factor. When I sat down, I supposed he noticed me as well, because he greeted me with a warm, “Hello, I’m Dan.” I was pleased he was so forward, and introduced myself as well. After a very brief question and answer session, I liked him even more. Not only did he go to my school, but he was indeed a writer, as well as an intern on a very popular show on HBO. I looked over at my friend who gave me the desirable nod of approval. I trusted her very much, so I continued to “wine and dine” my new found friend.

In what seemed like only a few minutes, the line began to move, and people were finally being instructed to head in to the theater. My writer friend had come alone, as he was a big comedy fan and none of his other more serious writer friends were interested. I offered to sit next to him, and the deal was sealed. Plus, one of my best friends approved, and what could possibly be better than that?

At the end of the night, just before we parted ways, Dan asked if he could have my phone number. I of course said yes, and scribbled on the back of his hand, which I thought was a very endearing action to take. Apparently it was, because my friend Dan called me the next day to set up a dinner date, no lines included. Although, a line is fine with me now. I guess they really aren’t that bad.
