College of Charleston Application
The Facts
The College of Charleston is a large public school located in the city of Charleston, South Carolina, and is home to over 9,000 undergraduate students and approximately 1,700 graduate students. The college is one of the oldest educational institutions in the country, and was founded in the year 1770 to be a pillar of the liberal arts in the South. The college is actually divided up into five smaller undergraduate schools including schools of arts, business and economics, education, humanities and social sciences, and sciences and mathematics. The college offers its students a wide array of majors; some of the most popular choices are business administration, communication, biology, psychology, and elementary education.
Admission to the College of Charleston is somewhat competitive, and many of the students in the applicant pool have been academically successful in the past. Last year over 8,000 students applied for admission, approximately 4,500 students were accepted, and about 1,870 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1120 to 1280, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 25. Additionally, over 62% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of around 3.67.
The College of Charleston has a manageable student to faculty ratio of 14:1, and students say that their professors are top notch, and remarkably accessible. They definitely make a concerted effort to be available to their students as often as possible, and have been known to give out their home phone numbers and email addresses for the students' use.
The Social Scene
The city of Charleston is a beautiful and historical city located on the Atlantic coast. The campus is near many popular beaches, so hanging out on the beaches and activities such as surfing are quite popular with students, especially on the weekends. The city also has just about every amenity possible, including clubs, bars, restaurants, shops, and cafes that are quite affordable and friendly to students.
There are quite a few fraternities and sororities at the school, and they are constantly throwing rowdy keg parties that a huge number of students attend. Drinking is most definitely a very popular activity, and apparently, the Charleston bars are pretty lax when it comes to carding. The college also has over 100 student-run clubs and organizations, as well as an official College Activities Board, which ensures that students are never bored.
The dating scene at the college is vibrant, and we hear that there are quite a few attractive individuals at the school...
