College of New Jersey Application
The Facts
The College of New Jersey is a rather moderately sized public college located in the town of Ewing, New Jersey and students get a private- school education for a fraction of the cost. The school is home to over 5,600 undergraduate students and approximately 1,000 graduate students. The college is actually divided up into several smaller undergraduate schools including schools of art, media, music, business, culture and society, education, engineering, nursing, and science. The college offers its students many many majors, most of which are geared toward preprofessional studies. However, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of business, elementary education, psychology, biology, and English.
Admission to the College of New Jersey is growing more and more competitive with each passing year, and many Jersey residents are becoming aware of the college. Last year, over 6,370 students applied for admission and approximately 3,000 students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 1,170 of those admitted actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1180 to 1360, and an average ACT score ranging from 24 to 30. Additionally, over 66% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.65.
The College of New Jersey has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 12:1, and students say that their teachers are incredibly dedicated, and make sure their students are well taken care of. In fact, many professors enlist students to help out with important research projects, and many of these opportunities lead to more permanent research fellowships. Other students complain that there is too much attention on the graduate students, and many of the undergraduates feel a bit neglected.
The Social Scene
The town of Ewing is rather small, and is actually located in a suburb of Trenton, New Jersey, and students do complain that there is a lack of things to do in the immediate area. However, New York City is only about a half an hour away by train, so most students go there on the weekends to have a bit more fun and entertainment. The city of Philadelphia is also only about a half an hour away by car, and is also a popular weekend destination. Many students actually have cars, as parking is really easy on campus and off.
There are no official fraternities or sororities on campus, and the college isn't really known as a party school, and many students commute from home, which many students accuse of taking away from a sense of community and a legitimate college experience. There are some student clubs and organizations that attempt to bring students together, but their efforts are generally futile.
The dating scene is just as scattered as the general social scene, but if you look hard enough, you should be able to find a good match.
