The Facts
Connecticut College is a rather small liberal arts college with unique academic offerings located in the town of New London , Connecticut . The college is home to over 1,700 undergraduate students and just about 12 graduate students. The school is perhaps best known for its eclectic samplings of majors, such as degrees in zoology, dance, gender and women's studies, film studies, medieval studies, and even neuroscience. Now if that isn't varied, I don't know what is! Some of the most popular areas with students include majors in the fields of economics, English, government, international relations, psychology, and history.
Admission to the school is actually quite competitive considering the college's diminutive size. Last year, over 5,000 students applied for admission to the college and approximately 1,500 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 500 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1205 to 1390, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 26-32. Additionally, over 46% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.76.
Connecticut College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 10:1, and nearly all of the classes at the school are held in discussion groups that are usually well under 20 students. Both the professors and the administration at the school are incredibly dedicated to the students, and it shows. Many teachers are known to invite students to their homes for dinner and discussion, and it is not uncommon for students to keep in touch with their undergraduate professors long after graduation.
The Social Scene
The town of New London , Connecticut is a former industrial town that has been working hard lately to revamp its appearance and reshape its reputation. Old warehouses and formerly dilapidated store fronts are now being remodeled into hip little coffee shops and cafes, and students are beginning to warm up a bit to the town. There is also a nearby town called Mystic that is far more developed and quite popular with CC students, most of whom own cars. On the weekends, many students opt to drive to the nearby cities of Boston or New York for a bit of urban excitement.
There are no fraternities or sororities at Connecticut College, but the students who attend aren't really the “type” anyhow. Most weeknights are spent studying, as many CC students are very concerned with their grades, however, they do know how to let loose on the weekends. We hear pot is a particularly popular “activity,” and the liberal atmosphere of the college only lends to that practice. There are however a few popular no-substance living options that offer a relief from the weekend insanity.
The dating scene is fantastic if you are a raging liberal or a lesbian; there are plenty of love fests to be had.
What’s Good
“The campus is gorgeous! It actually overlooks the Atlantic Ocean , and you can breathe in the coastal air on your way to class.”
“The dorms couldn't be better. You have plenty of space and they are really comfortable.”
“The teachers truly care about you here. You definitely feel taken care of.”
What’s Bad
“Every one here is uber-liberal, and while I'm a liberal myself, the majority of the students here seem to not want to hear any other opinion but their own.”
“New London doesn't really have much, and hasn't really embraced its status as a college town yet.”
“The athletics here kind of suck, and people aren't really into sports. There's a lack of overall spirit.”
