The Facts
Creighton University is a moderately sized private university that is associated with the Jesuit church, and it part of the Jesuits' larger national system of colleges and universities. The school is located in the city of Omaha, Nebraska, and is home to over 3,500 undergraduate students and approximately 2,800 graduate students. Creighton is divided up into three undergraduate colleges, including schools of arts and sciences, business administration, and nursing. The university is perhaps best known for its fantastic preprofessional programs; many of the programs in the sciences conduct important research projects studying everything from respiratory diseases to laser dentistry. Some of the most popular major choices are nursing, biology, psychology, finance, and journalism.
Admission to Creighton University is not terrifically competitive numerically; however, the applicant pool usually consists of highly motivated students who have been quite academically successful in the past. Last year, over 3,200 students applied to the school for admission, approximately 2,800 were accepted, and 940 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1070 to 1300, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 28. Additionally, over 69% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.67.
Creighton has a manageable student to faculty ratio of about 14:1, and most students agree that their professors are very accessible and quite concerned with their students' progress and well-being. Most of the classes are quite small, but they aren't usually discussion-based, and only require students to do the reading and grasp the concepts in the reading. This is a formet that many students resent, but there are occasional exceptions to the rule.
The Social Scene
The city of Omaha, Nebraska isn't particularly cosmopolitan, however, there are plenty of bars, clubs, shops, restaurants, and movie theaters to keep students relatively occupied on the weekends. There is a very large Greek presence on campus, and most of the student leadership of the university are members of the Greek system. The fraternities and sororities often throw some large and very popular parties on the weekends, and drinking is definitely a popular activity.
Sports are also a big deal at the school, which is a member of the NCAA Division I, and the men's basketball team can always expect very high attendance at their games. There is a communal sense of school spirit, and students are generally quite proud to be Creighton students.
The dating scene is quite vibrant, although it isn't very diverse. Most of the students are wealthy, Catholic, and white.
