California State University, Dominguez Hills Application
The Facts
California State University, Dominguez Hills is a branch of the larger CSU system which includes 22 schools throughout the state. The Dominguez Hills campus is actually located in the city of Carson, California, and hosts over 5,000 undergraduate students, 1,100 part-time students, and approximately 4,500 graduate students. The student population consists primarily of commuters. CSU Dominguez Hills is divided into several smaller programs, including schools of the liberal arts and sciences, business, fine arts, health sciences, as well as technology. These divisions offer majors in the areas of biological science, business (which includes an interesting labor studies program), communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education, health professions, and social science (which houses a renowned Mexican-American Chicano studies program.) Some of the most popular major choices are in the areas of liberal studies and business administration.
Admission to CSU Dominguez Hills is not particularly competitive; however, more and more qualified students have been applying with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 3,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,500 of those students were accepted; of those, about 1,200 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1010 to 1112, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 29. Additionally, more than 75% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.6.
CSU Dominguez Hills may not be as competitive as many other branches of CSU; however, they do maintain a reasonable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, which is far better than several of the other CSU schools. Many of the students say that they have very close and symbiotic relationships with their professors, and they know that they are always accessible and willing to help out.
The Social Scene
CSU Dominguez Hills is located in an urban area called Carson, which is only about 10 miles south of the large city of Los Angeles. Carson itself is pretty tame, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, however, Los Angeles is the center of the entertainment world, so many students head into the “City of Angels” on the weekends, or whenever they happen to have free time. The school is primarily commuter, so most students do own cars. CSU Dominguez Hills is home to seven national fraternities and sororities; however, because so many students don’t actually live on campus, the influence of the Greeks is kept to a bare minimum. Most Dominguez Hill students would rather go to a club or bar than to a crowded keg party at a frat house.
The dating scene is certainly diverse enough, but good luck trying to snag a date when nobody lives on campus...
What’s Good
“Even though we’re a part of the CSU system and can share all their bountiful resources, the school feels very private and small.”
“The party scene is kept pretty tame because not many people are around campus on the weekends. It makes it much easier to focus and actually study.”
“Having L.A. right there is really great; you’re still a bit outside of it, but it’s very much accessible.”
What’s Bad
“Because everyone commutes, campus is really lonely on the weekends. There’s just no one around.”
“The school tends to be extremely cliquey, and it’s very difficult to find a group if you’re new or a transfer.”
“The campus isn’t really kept up well. There are a lot of things that could use updating.”
