The Facts

Denison University is moderately sized private university located in the town of Granville, Ohio, and is home to over 2,113 undergraduate students. The university actually caters only to undergraduate students, which of course correlates into increased attention given to them. The school places a unique emphasis on interdisciplinary studies, and gives students plenty of hands-on experience in their respective fields. There are many majors offered at Denison in everything from orgazational studies to environmental studies; some of the most popular majors are economics, communication, biology, psychology, and political science.

Admission to the school is not extremely competitive numerically; however, many of the students in the applicant pool have been quite academically successful in the past. Last year, over 3,140 students applied to the school for admission, and approximately 2,125 students were accepted; of those, 630 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1130 to an impressive 1410, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 29. Additionally, over 82% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.6.

Denison University has a great student to teacher ratio of about 11:1, and students say that their teachers give them a lot of one-on-one attention, and make sure the students know they are available for assistance when they may require it. The school also boasts a fantastic honors program that over 30% of Denison students participate in. There is also a great mentorship program in which current honors students tutor new ones.

The Social Scene

The town of Granville, Ohio isn't exactly a buzzing place; however, the surrounding nature is quite beautiful. There are a couple of bars and clubs and some cute coffee shops, but nothing really beyond that. The Denison University campus is quite lovely, and even though some of the buildings are kind of run-down, they are currently being renovated in a major cosmetic overhaul. There are many fraternities and sororities on campus that are quite popular with students, and basically dictate the on-campus social life. Drinking is definitely a popular activity both on campus and off, but the weeknights are usually strictly reserved for studying.

Sports are also extremely popular at Denison, which is a member of NCAA Division III. and over 50% of students participate in sports of some sort. Those students who don't participate in sports often show up to cheer their peers on.

The dating scene is decent, although you can expect just to go to endless keg parties in place of proper dates.
