Drew University Admission
Drew University Undergraduate Program
Drew University Application
The Facts
Drew University is a small liberal arts college located in the town of Madison, New Jersey. The university is home to over 1,500 undergraduate students and approximately 915 graduate students. The school is perhaps best known for giving its students personal computers as part of their tuition, and for placing an emphasis on preparing its students for the “real world.” The school allows its students, most of whom are undecided when they arrive, to fully explore their options before they make a definitive decision about their major. The university offers students over 27 majors; some of the most popular choices are political science, psychology, economics, English, and sociology.
Admission to Drew University is somewhat competitive, and the general applicant pool tends to be quite motivated and academically successful. Last year, over 3,000 students applied to the school for admission, and approximately 1,900 of those students were accepted; of those, about 420 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1110 to 1320, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 26-31. Additionally, over 71% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.56.
Drew University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 12:1, and in general, students say that their professors are very dedicated and work hard to make sure their students are taken care of. Drew has a unique semester program in which students are able to spend a semester focusing on a particular topic and traveling into New York City (only 30 minutes away) to locations such as the U.N., Wall Street, and various art museums. The school also has a yearlong international program during which students travel to three or four international locations to attend three or four weeklong seminars on various topics.
The Social Scene
The town of Madison, New Jersey, is located only about 30 minutes from New York City, and Manhattan is easily (and cheaply) accessible by New Jersey Transit trains. Many students head into the city on the weekends, and even on some weeknights for special events. The town of Madison itself is not really very exciting, although it does have the usual amenities of any moderately-sized suburban town.
There are no official fraternities or sororities on campus, but students seem to be well equipped to maintain their own social lives. There is a lot of drinking on campus, but the more popular option is heading into New York City to experience the vibrant nightlife Manhattan has to offer.
The dating scene is quite vibrant, and you can expect to be whisked off to New York City for some pretty romantic candlelit ventures.
What’s Good
“The international program here amazing! You get to go to tons of far away places, and the university pays for it all!”
“The teachers here are amazing, and they give you a lot of one on one attention from them.”
“The dorms are surprisingly good. You actually have quite a bit of space, which is nice, and rare for a university.”
What’s Bad
“The campus is really small, and once you start seeing the same people over and over again, it begins to drive you nuts.”
“The administration here, unlike the professors, aren't very accomodating. It's impossible to speak with a human being.”
“The housing is kind of sparse, and it can be tricky to stay in on-campus housing for all four years here.”
