The Facts

Drexel University is a rather large private school located in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . Drexel is home to over 10,000 undergraduate students and approximately 4,770 graduate students who are able to study a wide range of preprofessional majors while participating in co-op internships. Drexel also operates on a quarter system, and most students alternate quarters of academics with quarters of paid internships in their respective fields. Drexel is perhaps best known for its engineering program, which is one of the largest private schools of engineering in the country. The school also has a fantastic information systems major that allows students to stay on the cutting edge of the field. Some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of information systems, computer science, mechanical engineering, marketing, and finance.

Admission to Drexel is quite competitive, particularly as national interest grows in its more specialized programs, such as art and design. Last year, over 11,000 students applied to the school for admission, and approximately 7,300 were accepted; of those, about 2,130 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1100 to 1290, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24-30. Additionally, over 64% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.52.

Drexel University has a quite low student to faculty ratio of 10:1, and students say it is rare to have any class with more than 25 students. Unfortunately, however, many students report that their professors are less than accessible, as many are professionals in their fields, and have outside jobs. Classes are reportedly quite tough, and most students struggle to balance their co-op internships with their academic work. The administration gets pretty low marks from students as well, who say it is nearly impossible to speak with a human being within it.

The Social Scene

The city of Philadelphia is a great city that offers students plenty of social opportunities. The city is full of history, and has many world-class museums, restaurants, theaters, and performance venues that ensure Drexel students are never at a loss for activities. The city has a great public transit system; however, most students do own cars, and take weekend road trips to nearby cities such as New York City and Boston .

There are fraternities and sororities at the school, but we hear that they aren't terrifically popular with students. Most students would prefer to hang out in small groups at local bars, or smoke pot in dorm rooms. The school also boasts over 100 student-run clubs and organizations that cater to every interest, and we hear many students get involved at some point.

The dating is quite vibrant at Drexel, and is known for its stunning array of diversity. We guarantee there will be something for everyone...

What’s Good

“The co-ops here are terrific, and the school really ensures that you graduate with a strong foundation to snag you a dream job.”

“Most of the classes here are nice and small, which is great when you are studying something that is very specialized.”

“The city is great, and on the weekends there is a ton of stuff going on.”

What’s Bad

“The teachers aren't very accessible, and they never hang around after classes to answer questions.”

“The financial aid here is really stingy. The administration is impossible to appeal to, so you are stuck with what you've got.”

“The housing is always an issue, and most students just give up and look for off-campus apartments.”
