Elon University Undergraduate Program
Elon University Application
The Facts
Elon University is a moderately sized private university associated with the United Church of Christ. The school is home to over 4,300 undergraduate students and approximately 150 graduate students. The university is divided up into several smaller undergraduate colleges, including schools of arts and sciences, education, communications, and business. The university places an emphasis on preprofessional education, and has one of the largest internship and volunteer programs in the country. Students have done everything from writing for MTV to interning in the White House. Elon University offers its students over 46 undergraduate majors; some of the most popular choices include communication, business, elementary education, psychology, and biology.
Admission to Elon University is quite competitive, and the applicant pool grows and strengthens each year as more and more attention is brought to the internship programs. Last year, over 7,100 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 3,200 were accepted; of those, about 1,230 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1070 to 1250 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 30. Additionally, over 57% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of around 3.6.
Elon University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 15:1; the professors make sure that they are accessible as possible to their students, and the gesture is much appreciated. Teachers have also been known to give students their home phone numbers in case anything urgent comes up. An interesting note--the university has some terrific research facilities, which house some of the most sophisticated equipment in the nation.
The Social Scene
The town of Elon, North Carolina is rather small, and doesn't offer students much in the way of entertainment. There are a couple of bars, but they are apparently quite strict in terms of carding, and aren't exactly student-friendly. Most students do own cars, and often venture to the nearby city of Raleigh for a bit more social excitement. The campus itself is quite beautiful, and is full of nicely pruned greenery and plenty of open spaces.
There are quite a few fraternities and sororities on campus, and we hear they are quite popular with students. There is a strict dry policy enforced by the administration, but we hear that students are pretty good at finding ways to evade the policy. Sports are also a popular activity at Elon, which is a member of the NCAA Division I. Some popular sports include football, swimming, and even water aerobics (if that can be called a sport...)
The dating scene is pretty standard; the school isn't exactly diverse, but if you dig, there are definitely some great catches.
What’s Good
“People here are really friendly, and the religious element isn't terribly invasive; it actually fosters a nice sense of community.”
“The campus is gorgeous, and its easy to find some nice quiet, green space when you need a bit of a break.”
“Housing is always plentiful, and most students live on campus, which is nice in terms of making friends and socializing.”
What’s Bad
“People run on the conservative side here, and a lot of people don't want to hear any opinion but their own.”
“The party scene really sucks here because people are afraid of getting busted by the administration.”
“No one goes to sports games here. Lots of people play, but there is never anyone coming to support them.”
