Emerson College Undergraduate Program
Emerson College Application
The Facts
Emerson College is a rather small, private, prestigious liberal arts college located in Boston, Massachusetts. The school is home to approximately 2,904 undergraduate students and about 984 graduate students. The college is perhaps best known for its communications program, and students are able to study areas including visual and media arts including film, TV, radio, and new media, as well as the performing arts, communication disorders, journalism, marketing communications, writing, literature and publishing. Some of the most popular majors with students include majors in the visual and media arts, performing arts, writing, literature and publishing, journalism, as well as marketing and advertising.
Admission to Emerson is fairly competitive; last year, just over 4,320 students applied and about 2,090 were admitted. Eventually however, only 700 of those admitted actually enrolled for the coming fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1110 to 1300, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 28. Over 77% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.5.
Emerson College is known for having very small classes, and students are able to reap the full benefits of the fantastic faculty at the school. The professors are always there for the students, and make sure the students known exactly when and where they are available to help out if they should need assistance, or even just someone to talk to. However, the professors are by no means easy on their students. The academic programs are quite rigorous, and students say the stress-levels can be quite high, especially around midterms and finals.
The Social Scene
The city of Boston is one of the best college towns in the country, as it is home to literally hundreds of institutions of higher education. Students say they are never bored at Emerson, and when they have free
time, they often frequent Boston clubs, bars, shops, cafes, theaters, restaurants, museums, etc. etc. etc. etc... The Emerson campus itself is quite beautiful, and the facilities are nothing less than state of the art. Some students complain about the lack of a centralized campus, but many urban school have this difficulty.
There are fraternities and sororities at the school, but students say that they do not really govern the social scene on campus at all. When you have a great city like Boston as your campus, you don’t really need
a Greek scene to keep you busy on the weekends. Emerson is definitely not known as a party school, as students are usually way too busy and focused on academics to waste their time getting knackered and running around the town.
The dating scene at Emerson is quite vibrant; expect lots of brainy guys and girls with a particular penchant for kooky fashion and perhaps a funky pair of glasses.
What’s Good
“The professors genuinely care about their students, and usually when you are done with a class, you will stay in contact with them after it finishes.”
“ Boston is as good as it gets when it comes to a place to go to college.”
“There is a real sense of community here, even though there isn’t really a real campus.”
What’s Bad
“There isn’t a campus here, so its difficult to feel like you are part of a real community.”
“The classes are almost too small, you stop learning, and instead, everyone just tries to tell each other how wrong they are.”
“People get way too competitive and stressed out here. It’s really annoying.”
