Emory University Application

The Facts

Emory University is a small privately funded school located just outside of Atlanta, Georgia. It is often affectionately dubbed “Coca Cola University ” because it runs primarily on funds provided by the soda company. However, the constant corporate backing allows the school to have fantastic facilities and programs that are constantly being revamped to keep the school at the top of its game. The university has approximately 6,157 undergraduate students and about 5,336 graduate students.

Emory is made up of several different schools including schools of arts and sciences, medicine, theology, law, nursing, public health and business. An interesting facet of Emory is that they offer a two year undergraduate college in a different location where younger students can reap the benefits of Emory for two years before transferring to the main campus in Atlanta. This program is particularly helpful for students who may need a little more time adjusting to university life. As a result of all the options, there are about 65 majors offered to undergraduates. The most popular majors tend to be pre-professional in nature, as Emory students tend to have an exact idea of what they want to do when they graduate. Some of the most popular majors with students include business, nursing, psychology and biology.

Admission to Emory is extremely competitive due to its international prestige; last year, over 10,300 students applied and only 4,357 were admitted. Eventually, however, only 1,296 actually enrolled. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from an impressive 1300 to 1460, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 29 to 33. Over 90% of admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.8.

Emory has an extremely small student to teacher ratio of 6:1; in fact, some students even say that it is ‘too close for comfort.’ In general, the faculty makes an effort to really interact with students, however, there are those who say that their teachers really could care less about their progress.

The Social Scene

Despite its tough academic standards, Emory is actually known for being somewhat of a party school. On the weekends, students love nothing more than to just let go and have a great time. Fraternities and sororities are big on campus, especially for the wild parties they are known to throw. Drinking is definitely a favorite activity of Emory students. However, off-time fun isn’t limited to the campus. Many students own cars, and choose to drive into the city of Atlanta to hang out at one of the many vibrant clubs, bars, restaurants, shops, and museums there. There are many clubs and organizations for students to become involved in, and many of them are actually service oriented.

When students are not partying, they are usually out helping the community and the less fortunate. Emory students really know how to balance their work and their play.

The dating scene at Emory is reputedly fantastic-- people are very laid back and tend to be really image-conscious, so expect a lot of guys and girls to be too-good-to-be-true.

What's Good

“The classes are miniscule, so you are able to get a lot of individualized attention and assistance from your professors.”

“Atlanta is so close and offers everything under the sun. If you can’t find something to do on the weekends, there is something wrong!”

“The faculty are the best in their field, and you known they are still out there contributing to research.”

What's Bad

“This school is overpopulated by spoiled rich kids with their wads of their parents’ money to blow.”

“The partying can get really out of hand on the weekends. It can get really difficult to study before finals.”

“If you don’t have a car, you are pretty much stranded. Public transit sucks and is really unsafe.”
