The Facts
Emporia State University is a rather moderately sized, state-supported institution located in the town of Emporia, Kansas, and is home to over 4,000 undergraduate students and approximately 2,200 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the 3 undergraduate schools or 1 graduate school, which offer academic programs in the liberal arts, business, teacher education, vocational fields, as well as various graduate programs. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (a large and popular program with majors as diverse as accounting as well as recreation and leisure services) communications and the arts, (home to great programs in art, English, music, and dramatic arts) computer and physical science, (also a large and popular program with majors as diverse as earth science as well as information sciences and systems) education, health professions, (home to a unique program in rehabilitation therapy) as well as the social sciences. Emporia State University offers its students a fairly wide range of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of elementary education, psychology, as well as business administration.
Admission to Emporia State University is not terribly competitive, however, the number of highly qualified students who apply has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 1,480 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,100 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 820 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1100 to 1160 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 30. Additionally, more than 70% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.75.
Emporia State University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and it is rare to find a class with more than 15 students at any level. Lecture courses are very rarely held, and most of the classes are discussion-based, giving students an opportunity to participate and have their voice heard. Professors also get high marks in terms of accessibility outside of class; students say they always know where to go for help.
The Social Scene
The town of Emporia is quite small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, however, Kansas City is only about two hours away by car, and many students head into the city on the weekends to take advantage of its more lucrative social and cultural offerings. The school is home to 10 national fraternities and sororities which are extremely popular with students; the Greeks basically govern the on campus social life. In fact, many students attribute the entire social and party scene to the presence of the Greeks on campus. Drinking is definitely a very popular mode of social interaction, however, there are plenty of other options for those students who aren’t a fan of “getting wasted...”
The dating scene is quite vibrant, and the students are every color of the rainbow, both literally and figuratively...
What’s Good
“I love the students here; they aren’t overly competitive and high strung. They just do what they’ve got to do.”
“My professors do everything in their power to make themselves as available for help as possible.”
“There are always parties going on to take your mind off of how stressed out you are about an upcoming exam.”
What’s Bad
“There are a lot of general education requirements here you have to get through until you can even begin on your major.”
“There isn’t a whole lot to do on campus but drink and party. Even that can get old.”
“There isn’t much cultural diversity here. Everyone is sort of from the same general area.”
