Dear College Admission Expert,
I really feel drawn to the more expensive private universities, but my family doesn’t really have the financial means to afford it. Should I just give up?

Randi,
No way! You’ll be surprised to find that many of those universities are quite accommodating in the financial aid department. If you are admitted and could be a valuable asset to the university, they will often make it possible for you to attend. This may mean that you will be paying back loans for a very long time, but it’s up to you. If you think the school is worth it, then this is only a “small” price to pay for a terrific education. If you receive your proposed financial package and it isn’t enough, you can usually appeal to the financial aid department by letter, and it is possible to receive an increase in aid, however, this is rare. The bottom line is, explore all your options and be persistent! Also, check out some of the private scholarship foundations on web sites such as www.fastweb.com; there are often hundreds of scholarships you are eligible to apply for. Don’t lose hope!
