Dear College Admission Expert,
I’m really disappointed because I just found out I’ve been put on the waiting list for my first choice college. Is there anything I can do to improve my chances of ultimately being accepted?

Sarit,
Hey, look at it this way; being on the waiting list is better than not being admitted at all! It’s important to let the college know that it still is your first choice. Rather than seeming desperate, just send the head admissions officer a nice, brief letter just letting them know that the college is still your first choice, and that you are excited at the prospect of attending. Also, you can even have your high school counselor make a call on your behalf recommending that they consider your application further. Admissions officers like to see driven, persistent, (but not desperate) students that would be a valuable addition to their freshmen class. The last thing admissions officers want to do is offer a spot to a waiting list student only to be refused.
