Dear College Admission Expert,
I’ve heard from a lot of people that on campus housing is actually more expensive than an off campus apartment in the long run. So now, I’m stuck between choosing to live off campus, or a dorm. What should I do?

Alvani,
Most schools require that all freshmen live on campus, so you should check this out first. Also, living in the dorms your first year really is key when it comes to meeting people and developing a solid social group. If you live off campus, you may not make as many friends right away, and you might feel left out in general. In many cases, dorms can be just a tad more expensive than some apartments, however, you are also paying (usually) for ready made food, security, as well as a built in social life and structure. If I were you, I’d definitely try out your first year in the dorms, and you can always move to an apartment in the years to come, and many other people do as well.
