The Facts

Fairfield University is a rather moderately sized private Jesuit school located in the town of Fairfield , Connecticut , and is home to over 3,400 undergraduate students and approximately 1,030 graduate and part- time students. The school is perhaps best known for its research and internship opportunities offered to students as early as freshmen year. The university is actually divided up into several smaller undergraduate colleges including schools of arts and sciences, business, nursing, and engineering. The school offers some innovative academic programs, including the newly installed program for “Judaic Studies.” Fairfield University offers its students a wide variety of majors, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of communications, psychology, finance, English, and biology.

Admission to Fairfield University is fairly competitive, although not nearly as academically competitive as other East Coast private schools. Last year, over 7,700 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 3,800 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 790 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1110 to 1280, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 27. Additionally, over 74% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of around 3.39.

Fairfield University has a terrific student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and it is rare to find a class of more than 20 students. Professors get high marks from students for accessibility, and they work incredibly hard to foster a tightly woven community among their classes. The Jesuit philosophy of developing the mind, body, and soul definitely applies at Fairfield , and the professors tends to be the true core of this very nuturing and inspiring environment.

The Social Scene

The town of Fairfield , Connecticut is quite small, but is absolutely beautiful. Fairfield county is one of the wealthiest places on the East Coast, so unfortunately, there is not much available to college students. All students are required to live in on campus housing, unless they commute from home; this is just one of the many security measures that makes Fairfield University one of the safest schools in the nation.

There are no fraternities or sororities on campus, but most students don't seem to mind. The school is definitely not a place for partiers, and the religious element definitely dampens the prospect for debauchery. Most students would rather focus on community service, and often get involved in extensive volunteer projects that take up the majority of their out-of-class time.

The dating scene isn't terrific, but on the other hand, it is what you make of it. Although the student body isn't very diverse, the students are quite friendly and eager to please...
