Flagler College Application
The Facts
Flagler College is a small private liberal arts school located in the town of St. Augustine, Florida, and is home to over 2,000 undergraduate students, and no graduate students. The college is perhaps best known for offering a fantastic array of rather unique majors such as stained glass making, deaf education, and fashion merchandising, all for a very cheap price tag; around $8,000 for tuition and about $6,600 for room and board, which is quite a deal for out-of-state students. The college offers its students about 20 majors in a wide range of areas, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of business administration, education, communication, psychology, and sports management.
Admission to Flagler College is actually quite competitive, as many accomplished students from throughout the nation are drawn to the remarkably low price tag for such a quality education. Last year, over 2,000 students applied to the school for admission, and approximately 630 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 440 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1040 to 1210, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 26. Additionally, over 52% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of around 3.22.
Flagler College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and students generally agree that their professors are very accessible, and they enjoy having classes that usually hover around 20 students, and are primarily discussion based. The administration generally does a terrific job of communication with students, which is a rare quality for colleges nowadays. There is a definite preprofessional emphasis at the school, and students say that they feel extremely prepared to face the “real world” when they graduate.
The Social Scene
The town of St. Augustine, Florida is quite beautiful, and is an unabashed tourist attraction. The campus is very near the beach, and many students hang out and surf on the weekends, and even on their breaks between classes. The Flagler campus itself is quite beautiful, and all of the classes are actually held in one building that has gorgeous Tiffany windows. The building was actually a former hotel, and retains much of its original architecture, including painted ceilings and small-tiled floors.
The school doesn't have any fraternities or sororities, but students say they don't really mind. Although the campus is officially dry, the town boasts a pretty good array of bars and clubs that are loose when it comes to carding. Sports are also a popular diversion, and range from surfing (of course) and beach volleyball.
The dating scene is quite vibrant; expect lots of beach bums, but in the best possible sense.
