Fordham University Admission
Fordham University Undergraduate Program
Fordham University Application
The Facts
Fordham University is a small Jesuit college located in the massive New York City. The school is home to just over 6,700 undergraduate students and approximately 7,400 graduate students. The school is actually divided up into three campuses throughout the New York metro area, but the main one is located just off of Lincoln Center in midtown Manhattan. The university is also comprised of several smaller undergraduate colleges including schools of liberal arts and sciences, English, history, theology, political science, sociology, and the performing arts. (Their theater program is particularly lauded.) The school offers a huge amount of majors, literally hundreds, however some of the most popular with students include majors in business marketing, social sciences and history, communications, psychology, and the visual and performing arts.
Admission to Fordham is fairly competitive, with a jump of the number of applicants occurring in recent years. Last year, over 13,000 students applied for admission, and approximately 7,000 were admitted. Eventually however, only about 1,700 students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1090 to 1282, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 28. Over 70% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.64.
The academics at the school are reputedly quite competitive, and this is perhaps due to the diminutive class size. The school has a great student to faculty ratio of 11:1, and students say that they really feel taken care of at the school. There are many many internships available throughout the city, and students love taking advantage of as many of these opportunities as they can, as the job market in NYC is quite tough, and it ends up being all about who you know and being in the right place at the right time.
The Social Scene
Students love being smack in the middle of such an amazing city, and constantly take advantage of the entertainment and excitement the city has to offer. On the weekends, students love to check out discounted
Broadway shows, museums, concerts, bars, clubs, shopping, restaurants; you name it, the city’s got it and students know about it. There are no fraternities and sororities, but there are multiple cultural clubs that are similar to the Greek houses in structure and intent.
Students say that the Jesuit religious influence can be there if you want it to be, but you are not required to attend Mass, although many students do. We hear that religion and spirituality is usually a binding influence for Fordham students; it gives very different people a common ground to stand on, and when the going gets tough in the academic world, it can help to put things into perspective.
The dating scene is great, especially because of New York City. There is something for everyone here, no matter what your preferences.
What's Good
“The school feels like a tight-knit community. It’s a bit of calm in a restless city.”
“There are so many amazing internships here. I’ve had about five prospective dream jobs.”
“Students are really active here, and if they are interested in starting something, they’ll do it right away, and make sure the word gets out.”
What's Bad
“People can be really cliquey here. Sometimes it feels a bit like a country club instead of a college.”
“Sometimes the city can drive you nuts. It’s really distracting from your academics, and it can be overwhelming as well.”
“The split campuses can be really annoying. It involves a lot of commuting if you want to take a class at a different campus.”
