The students are able to take courses in one of the university’s 4 undergraduate schools or 1 graduate school which offer academic programs in the areas of the arts and sciences, business and leadership, education, health and life sciences, as well as preprofessional studies. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of agriculture, (home to a popular program in agricultural business management) biological science, business, (a large and popular program with majors as diverse as accounting as well as office supervision and management) communications and the arts, (home to some wonderful foreign language departments) computer and physical science, (which includes a rather innovative program in radiological science) education, health professions, as well as the social sciences (home to a terrific department of criminal justice). Fort Hays State University offers its students a rather wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular include majors in the areas of speech pathology, interdisciplinary studies, teacher education, as well as business administration.

Last year, over 1,600 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,400 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 880 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1100 to 1160 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 30. Additionally, more than 70% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.7.
Fort Hays State University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and while some of the general education courses are held in lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by a significantly smaller seminar courses where students get a chance to discuss the content of the previous lecture. Professors also get high marks from students in terms of accessibility; the faculty makes sure their students are well taken care of.
The Social Scene
The town of Hays is quite small, and isn’t really located near any major cities; unfortunately, there isn’t much offered to students in the way of entertainment. Most of the social happenings are on campus, where there are many student clubs and organizations that run the gamut from an LSGB branch to a drill team. The university is also home to 3 national fraternities and sororities which are quite popular with students, and basically govern on campus social life. The weekend parties are quite prolific to say the least, and at these soirees, drinking is definitely the most popular form of social interaction.
The dating scene is quite diverse, and we hear there are quite a few hopeless romantics to be found...

What’s Bad
“There isn’t anything to do off-campus; you have to stay on campus all the time if you want to have any fun.”
“Some of the general education courses are really silly for us to take. I’ve done it already.”
“The administration is kind of difficult to talk to.”
