The Facts

The Franklin and Marshall College is a rather small liberal arts college located in the rural town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and is home to over 2,000 undergraduate students. The college is known for its extremely intense academics, and its heavy workload. The students often go on to graduate school, and see college as a preparatory experience for the rigors to come. The school offers many unique required courses including classes such as “Shakespeare's Comedies,”

and “Growing Up is Hard to Do.” The college offers its students a wide array of majors for nearly every preprofessional area, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of government, business administration/ management, English, business administration/ accounting, finance, as well as psychology.

Admission to Franklin and Marshall College is not terrifically competitive numerically, however, the applicant pool tends to be extremely motivated and academically successful in the past. Last year, over 4,000 students applied to the school for admission, and approximately 2,050 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 500 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1150 to 1350, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 26 to 31. Additionally, over 76% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of around 3.7.

Franklin and Marshall College has a terrific student to faculty ratio of around 11:1, and students generally agree that their teachers are very dedicated and accessible. There are the occasional teachers who are working professionals, and seem to have no time to help students, but they are rare. The school is also well known for its premed program, and it has state-of-the-art research facilities in which students are able to help conduct important medical and scientific research.

The Social Scene

The town of Lancaster , Pennsylvania is very small, and is barely a town at all. It is situated in the middle of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and is extremely safe and peaceful, however, there is literally nothing terrifically exciting for students to do beside visiting various Amish shops. The campus itself is nice enough, although many of the buildings are fairly dilapidated and in need of repair. The school is making an attempt to revamp their image, and has recently built a concert hall and a dance studio.

There are several fraternities and sororities on campus, and they do tend to make up for the town's lack of social options. The throw some fairly rowdy parties with plenty of alcohol available for consumption.

The small school also boasts over 120 student run clubs and organizations, which many students get involved in during their freshmen year.

The dating scene is whatever you make of it. While the school isn't very diverse, the people are very friendly, if you know what I mean...

What’s Good

“Everything is very peaceful around here, which makes it easy to get work done.”

“The teachers really care about you, and you always feel well-taken care of.”

“There are some great parties on the weekends, which are a nice diversion from the tough academics.”

What’s Bad

“There is nothing to do in Lancaster . Everyone there is Amish, so life is really really really really simple...”

“There is a total lack of diversity here, and you don't get a very well-rounded view of the world.”

“The sports are terrible. If you are a jock, this is most likely not the best place for you.”
