The Facts
Friends University is a rather small, private institution located in the city of Wichita, Kansas, and is affiliated with an interdenominational Christian organization. The school is home to over 900 undergraduate students and approximately 700 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in one of the university’s 3 undergraduate or 3 graduate schools which offer academic programs in the areas of the arts and sciences, business, information technology, as well as adult and professional studies. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, (home a wonderful program in zoology) business, (a large and popular program with majors as diverse as accounting and management information systems) communications and the arts, (home to a surprisingly good program in ballet, as well as musical theater, and the fine arts) computer and physical science, (which includes a unique program in information sciences and systems) education, (also a large and popular program with a wide variety of education-related majors) engineering and environmental design, health professions, (which only offers a major in pre medicine) as well as the social sciences. Friends University offers its students a rather wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of science, business, as well as education.
Admission to Friends University is not very competitive in the least, however the number of highly qualified applicants has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 500 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 480 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 250 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1010 to 1100 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 30. Additionally, more than 65% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.
Friends University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 15:1, and it is very rare to find a class at any level with more than 15 students. Classes are based around the principle of intellectual discourse and discussion, and all students get a chance to have their voice heard by the class.
The Social Scene
The city of Wichita has a rapidly growing population, and offers students plenty of things to do; in fact, new activities and places are popping up constantly. The campus also has its share of activity; there are many student clubs and organizations on campus, as well as 2 local and national fraternities and sororities. They aren’t terrifically popular with students, however, they do throw some weekend parties that are well attended. Alcohol is definitely a popular mode of social interaction, but there are plenty of other things to do as well.
The dating scene is quite diverse, and doesn’t the name of the university say enough?

What’s Bad
“The school is too small for my tastes. After awhile, there are no new people to meet.”
“There tends to be on campus housing shortages, and finding off campus housing is not an easy feat, let me tell you.”
“There are some people here who seem to think they’re still in high school.”
