The Facts
Georgetown University is located in the politically dominated and vibrant city of Washington, D.C. It’s prestige is visible in its long list of distinguished alumni, which includes Bill Clinton and several supreme court justices. Students here are highly motivated, driven people who know exactly where they want to go in life. In fact, students must already known what major they want to pursue when they apply, as they are required to submit themselves specifically to one undergraduate college; their choices include the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Robert E. McDonough School of Business, the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, and the School of Nursing and Allied Health Studies. Like many other schools in D.C., the primary focus is on international affairs and public service, with a special emphasis on global dynamics. Some of the most popular majors at Georgetown are international politics, biology, English, nursing, and government.
Admission to Georgetown is quite competitive; last year, over 15,400 students applied while only 3,505 were admitted; of those, about 1,528 matriculated. The Class of 2004 had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1290 to 1460, and an average combined ACT score ranging from 28 to 32. Of those admitted, over 83% were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an impressive average GPA of 3.87.
The school is best known for its list of incredible faculty, most who are also active members in their various fields. With a student to faculty ratio of only 11:1, students are able to develop close working bonds with their professors, who often will offer their best students a highly prized internship or research opportunity.
The Social Scene
Students are never bored at Georgetown. The surrounding area is filled with many shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs which students frequent both day and night. The residents are very accommodating, and students say that D.C. is truly a college town. The campus itself is also extremely safe, and students have no problem walking around late at night. There is no official Greek system at Georgetown; however, this doesn’t pose a problem for students since there are always dorm parties and off-campus bashes for students to enjoy nearly every day of the week when they are not chin-deep in studying.
Students at Georgetown love their sports, and both the basketball and football teams have cult-like followings; students love to tailgate before games, and often celebrate either a win or a loss with multiple parties. Georgetown University also offers over 100 student-run clubs and organizations that many of the public-service oriented students take part in frequently. If Georgetown is your school, boredom should definitely be the absolute least of your concerns!
