Georgia Institute of Technology Undergraduate Program
Georgia Institute of Technology Application
The Facts
The Georgia Institute of Technology is a rather large public school that places heavy emphasis on the sciences and engineering. The school is located in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, and is home to over 10,400 undergraduate students and approximately 5,400 graduate and part-time students. The institute is divided up into several smaller undergraduate colleges, including schools of architecture, engineering, computing, liberal arts, sciences, and management. Of the approximately 60 majors offered at GIT, some of the most popular choices include computer science, mechanical engineering, business management, industrial engineering, and electrical engineering.
Admission to Georgia Tech is fairly competitive, and many of the students who apply are highly motivated and very academically savvy, with a strong idea of the career they want to pursue. Last year, over 8,600 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 5,400 were accepted; of those, about 2,300 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1250 to an impressive 1430, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 26 to 30.
Additionally, over 58% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.72.
Georgia Tech has a great student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and students generally agree that their professors make time to help them. There are, however, also a large number of teachers who maintain other jobs and do research outside of the institute, so they may not be able to be as helpful as students would like. However, students do get a lot of hands-on experience, and there are many research fellowships available that occasionally turn into jobs after graduation.
The Social Scene
The city of Atlanta is vibrant and bustling, and offers students just about every urban amenity they could wish for. There are tons t of bars nearby; however, students say that they are very strict when it comes to carding. But have no fear; the party scene on campus is pretty great as well. There are quite a few fraternities and sororities that throw some aweseome parties on the weekends, and they are often for a good cause; so you can drink guilt-free!
The Georgia Tech campus itself is quite nice, and the buildings have recently gotten an overhaul due to the 1996 Summer Olympics. There are plenty of green spaces and trees to give you a break from the urban jungle, and we hear that hanging out on the greens is a popular between-class activity. Few students own cars, as the parking situation on campus could use some improvement; however, the Atlanta public transit system is a terrific and cheap way to get around town.
The dating scene is just as vibrant and diverse as the school itlsef; we hear that there are surprisingly few bona fide “geeks....”
What’s Good
“The academics here are terrific, and you get a really thorough hands-on experience in each major-oriented class.”
“The dorms are awesome, and I rarely hear people saying they want to move to an apartment.”
“The professors are absolutely brilliant, and often receive national attention for recent discoveries and theories.”
What’s Bad
“The workload is way too intense here. I have no time for anything but studying. It gets pretty overwhelming.”
“People get really competitive here, because it feels like we are all fighting for future jobs.”
“There isn't a very solid sense of community here, which is kind of disappointing. People prefer to hang out in little cliques.”
