The Facts
Goucher College is a small, private liberal arts and sciences school located in the city of Baltimore, Maryland, and is home to over 1,300 undergraduate students and approximately 1,000 graduate and part-time students. The college places a distinct emphasis on international perspectives through interdisciplinary studies, and has a terrific study abroad program that offers students a chance to complete international internships. The school offers its students a wide variety of majors in its 18 different programs; some of the most popular choices include English, biological sciences, psychology, sociology, and communication.
Admission to Goucher College isn't terrifically competitive numerically; last year, over 3,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,800 of those students were accepted; of those, about 340 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1110 to 1310, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 29. Additionally, over 60% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of around 3.23.
Goucher College has a terrific student to faculty ratio of 10:1, and it is extremely rare to find a class with more than 18 students. Even the core curriculum classes tend to be quite intimate and in discussion form. The faculty and administration are incredibly accessible, and do everything they can to cater to students. There is even a great career services office that has workshops on resumes and general career matters. The school also boats a great honor program that allows motivated students to participate in interdisciplinary studies.
The Social Scene
The city of Baltimore, Maryland, isn't known for being the safest of cities, but students don't seem to mind; they say the city has made a recent attempt to revamp its image with new shops, restaurants, coffee houses, and concert halls. The college itself is located just outside the city in a suburb called Towson, which is wooded and residential. The Goucher campus is quite lovely, with plenty of trees and green spaces. as well as some great old buildings and a fantastic library with extensive research collections.
There are no fraternities or sororities on campus, but it doesn't seem to bother students. They manage to have their own fun, and say that the residence halls are really at the core of on campus social life. Most students own cars, and head down to Baltimore on the weekends and weeknights to have a bit more urban excitement.
The dating scene is an interesting one; the school recently switched from being all-women's to coed, so guys, there is definitely no shortage of women...
