Graceland University Application
The Facts
Graceland University is a small, private university located in the town of Lamoni, Iowa, and is affiliated with the Community of Christ. The school is home to over 1,300 undergraduate students and approximately 320 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university’s four undergraduate or four graduate schools, which offer programs in both the liberal arts and sciences and preprofessional studies. The academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business (a large program with majors as diverse as accounting and recreational facilities management), communications and the arts (home to a great performing arts department), computer and physical sciences, education, engineering and environmental design (which houses a unique program in commercial art), health professions (also a large program with majors in pre-veterinary science, pre-dentistry, and pre-medicine), and the social sciences. Some of the most popular majors include business administration, education, and nursing.
Admission to Graceland University is not terrifically competitive; however, the number of qualified students who apply has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 1,020 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 585 of those students were accepted; of those, about 250 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1080 to 1120, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 25 to 31. Additionally, more than 70% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.7.
Graceland University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 14:1, and most students agree that one of the biggest perks of attending the university is the small class size. Most of the classes are centered around discussion where all students get an equal chance to have their voices heard. The professors also get high marks in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out when they may need it.
The Social Scene
The town of Lamoni, Iowa is quite small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment; however, the larger city of Des Moines is only about an hour’s drive away, and many students head into the city on the weekends to take advantage of its more lucrative social offerings. The school has no fraternities or sororities, which, combined with the administration’s strict dry policy, makes for a pretty weak on-campus party scene. Most students hang out in small groups or head into Des Moines when they want to have a good time.
The dating scene doesn’t offer much variety, but the students have that good old-fashioned Midwestern charm...
What’s Good
“The campus has a lot of unique facilities including a center for the study of the Korean War.”
“People are very calm and laid back here. There’s no rushing about to get things completed.”
“The professors obviously love what they’re doing, and love their students.”
What’s Bad
“There is nothing to do here. If we had some Greek organizations, maybe our party scene could get a boost.”
“The town isn’t very student-friendly, even though it has a lot of potential.”
“There are a lot of close-minded people here who make class discussions very difficult.”
