The Facts

The Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University is a rather moderately-sized, public institution located in the town of Normal, Alabama, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 6,000 students. The university's graduate School of Business, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 710 graduate business students. Approximately 90% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 10 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing portfolios. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 25, however, ages range from 22 all the way up to 60. Approximately 40% of the currently enrolled students enter directly from undergraduate school, while about 5% of the students already have a degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its diverse approaches in training students to be creative managers. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Economics (MS), as well as several interdisciplinary programs in MS in Planning and International Economic Development in conjunction with the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The school also offers joint research programs as well as internships and work-study opportunities. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of marketing, management, as well as economics.

Admission to the university's graduate School of Business is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 600 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 450 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 235 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.2 as well as an average GMAT score of about 510. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.5, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 350. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall, winter, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admission's status on a rolling basis.

The university's graduate School of Business has 40 full-time faculty members, of whom 90% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 1 part-time faculty members. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 25 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 9 credit hours at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather limited placement services, as most graduate business students already are employed full-time. The services that do exist, however, are available to both current students as well as alumni for an unlimited amount of time after receiving their degrees. These services include interview workshops, resume critiques and workshops, career fairs, as well as referrals by the placement office.

What's Good

"The faculty is really dedicated, which makes me want to be more participatory in class."

"The cross-registration programs are great, and they give you a chance to network with students at other universities."

"The administration is wonderful, and takes time to make your experience as painless as possible."

What's Bad

"We aren't really near any large urban areas, which makes our internship options a bit limited."

"I wish we had more variety in terms of the courses offered. I would like to see a little more irregular, unique curriculum offered."

"It would be nice to have more career services. Those who don't have jobs are kind of left in the lurch."
