The Facts

Azusa Pacific University is a rather small, private university located in the town of Azusa, California, and is affiliated with the Christian church. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 3,000 students, however, the graduate business program is significantly smaller, and is home to about 150 graduate business students. Approximately 54% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 2 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 26, however, ages ranged from 23 to 52. Approximately 9% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 2% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The graduate business program is perhaps best known for its emphasis on the creation of new case studies through the practical application of theory. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Arts in Human and Organizational Development (MAHOD), as well as a weekend MBA for Christian business leaders and professionals. The school also offers its students plenty of internship and work-study opportunities throughout the community as well as in the nearby Los Angeles. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of strategy, management, as well as organizational development.

Admission to Azusa Pacific University's graduate business program is extremely competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 300 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 170 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 58 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.9, as well as an average GMAT score of about 650. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 450. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate business program has 11 full-time faculty members, of whom 50% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 15 part-time faculty members, of whom 20% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 20 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 4 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather limited placement services, as many students are already fully employed when they enroll. The services that are available, however, are available to both current students as well as alumni for an unlimited amount of time after receiving their degrees, and include career counseling, online job listings, and alumni newsletters.

What's Good

"The classes are nice and small, which is helpful for both us and for our professors."

"The school seems to be really keyed into the community, which is really great for networking."

"There is a very nurturing environment here, not like the more cutthroat programs."

What's Bad

"The school isn't cheap, and there is very limited financial aid available to graduate students."

"There needs to be more on campus graduate housing; rent around here isn't terribly affordable for students."

"Sometimes the religious take on business can be a bit strange, kind of inhibiting."
