The Facts

California State University, San Bernardino is a rather large, public institution located in the appropriately titled town of San Bernardino, California, and is home to a total of approximately 16,000 graduate and undergraduate students. The graduate College of Business and Public Administration, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 350 graduate business students. Approximately 80% of the enrolled students have had an average of 3 to 6 years of full-time professional experience, and as a result of this fact, the average entrance age is about 29, however, it ranges from 23 all the way up to 60. The admissions committee takes previous work experience into serious consideration when reviewing applications. Approximately 24% of students enroll directly from undergraduate school, while about 4% of students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The College of Business and Public Administration is perhaps best known for is emphasis in qualitative, quantitative, and case method approaches in order to improve students' problem solving and teamwork skills. The school offers degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), as well as plenty of internship opportunities with local and national businesses. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of finanace, information systems, marketing, accounting, operations management, management and human resources, as well as entrepreneurship.

Admission to CSU San Bernardino's College of Business and Public Administration is quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 204 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 136 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 60 of those students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.1, and an average GMAT score of 522. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.5, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 470. Students may begin their graduate studies in either the fall, winter, or spring, and admission is done on a rolling basis.

The graduate College of Business and Public Administration has 77 full-time faculty members, of whom an impressive 98% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 44 part-time faculty members, of whom 4% hold a doctorate degree. Most faculty members teach an average of 8 credit hours, and the average graduate business class has around 30 students.

Placement Services

The school's placement services are quite extensive; in fact, last year, 40 companies were actively recruiting on campus, 40% of which were national corporations. The majors most in demand by these companies were accounting, finance, operations management, as well as information systems. The average starting salary of last year's graduating class was about $47,000, however, it ranged from $28,000 to $92,000. Placement services for alumni are available, however, these do require a rather nominal initiation fee.

What's Good

"The career development office and placement services are wonderful. They are always on top of where the market is currently."

"The classes are really dynamic, and actually get you excited about getting out and applying the skills you're learning."

"The professors usually do a very good job of being accessible outside of class. It's nice to have that convenience."

What's Bad

"There tends to be quite a bit of competition here. It can be very intimidating."

"There can be a divide between professors and students who don't share the same business philosophies. Favorites are often played."

"I wish there were more Masters degrees offered. At the moment, there are only two."
