The Facts

The Dominican University of California is a rather small, private institution located in the town of San Rafael, California, and has a total undergraduate and graduate enrollment of about 1,653 students. The graduate School of Business, Education and Leadership, however, is significantly smaller, and has approximately 150 graduate business students. About 78% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 4 years of full-time professional experience, which is a factor taken into account by the admissions committee when reviewing applicants. As a result of this fact, the average age of entrance to the school is around 34, however, the ages range from 21 all the way up to 59. Approximately 10% of currently enrolled students enter directly from undergraduate school, and about 10% of students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The graduate school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on cross-cultural awareness and global studies, as well as the emphasis on the practical application of the theoretical. The School of Business, Education and Leadership offer students graduate degrees in Global Strategic Management (MBA/GSM), Master of Business Administration in Strategic Leadership (MBA/SL), as well as several interdisciplinary programs in areas studies and cross-cultural communications. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of marketing, finance, marketing management, as well as cross-cultural communications.

Admission to the Dominican University of California's graduate School of Business, Education, and Leadership is fairly competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 98 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 65 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 35 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.5, as well as an average GMAT score of 540 (although the GMAT is only recommended and not required). The admissions committee does require all applicants to have a minimum average undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0. Students are able to commence their graduate studies in either the fall or the spring, and admissions notification is on a rolling basis.

The graduate School of Business, Education, and Leadership has 7 full-time faculty members, of whom 76% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 20 part-time faculty members, of whom 16% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class has about 14 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 6 courses.

Placement Services

The school has a rather extensive placement service; last year, there were many national corporations actively recruiting on campus, including several major non profits. The average starting salary of last year's graduating class was about $40,000, however, it ranged from $22,000 to $100,000. Additionally, an impressive 75% of last year's graduating class found a job within three months of receiving their degrees.

What's Good

"The whole humanitarian approach is great. They're teaching you to be more than just ruthless."

"The professors are extremely dedicated to this place, and it shows."

"There is a surprising lack of competition among students. It just isn't encouraged here."

What's Bad

"It's expensive! And they're a bit stingy on the financial aid; not all of us are already CEOs!"

"I kind of wish there were a bit more of a competitive spirit here; it would help prepare you to reenter the world of business."

"Some of the course requirements seem a bit pointless."
