The Facts

Dowling College is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Oakdale, New York, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 6,446 students. The college's graduate school of business, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 1000 graduate business students. Approximately 90% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 7 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 35, however, ages range from 21 all the way up to 60. Approximately 10% of the currently enrolled students enter directly from undergraduate school, while about 20% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on business simulations, as well as for its international business community connections. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), as well as cross-registration possibilities with Suffolk County and Nassau County community colleges, and a joint degree in law (MBA/JD) in conjunction with Touro Law School. There are also plenty of opportunities for work-study and internship opportunities, as well as interdisciplinary programs in aviation and transportation. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of total quality management, finance, as well as management.

Admission to Dowling College's School of Business is moderately competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 522 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 450 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 275 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.3, as well as an average GMAT score of about 540. The admissions committee requires students to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.75, as well as a minimum GMAT score of 450. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall, winter, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate school of business has 19 full-time faculty members, of whom 53% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 151 part-time faculty members, of whom 11% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class numbers around 20 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 4 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather limited placement services, however, most students are already employed full-time when they enroll for the school. There are some limited services available to both current students and alumni, which include career counseling as well as resume referral. There is also a college placement office that works with students on networking issues.

What's Good

"The classes are nice and small, and we're always having great discussions."

"My professors are very accessible, and I always feel like I can go to them with whatever questions I may have."

"The administration is great with getting questions answered quickly and efficiently."

What's Bad

"I wish there were more career services available. Not many companies come here to recruit."

"There isn't the diversity of courses that I would like there to be. Your options are relatively limited."

"Some classes are impossible to get into, and they're usually the ones you actually need to take."
