The Facts

Georgetown University is a rather moderately-sized, private university located in Washington, D.C., and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 12,688 students, however, the graduate Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business is significantly smaller, and is home to about 570 graduate business students. Approximately 97% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 4 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps due to this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 28, however, ages range from 21 to 43. Approximately 3% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 6% of students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on global business and its fusion of traditional case methods with discussion and intellectual discourse. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), International Executive Master of Business Administration (IEMBA), as well as joint degrees in law (JD/MBA), foreign service (MBA/MSFS), public policy (MBA/MPP), and medicine (MD/MBA). The school also offers cross-registration opportunities with members of the Consortium of College and Universities in the Washington Municipal Area, as well as work-study programs, internships, and foreign exchange programs with 10 counties. Some of the most popular programs include courses in the areas of finance, marketing, consulting, strategy, as well as international business relations.

Admission to the Georgetown School of Business is extremely competitive among those who apply; last year, over 2,000 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 450 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 320 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.3, as well as an average GMAT score of about 650. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.75, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 500. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall only, and are notified of their admissions status in 6 to 8 weeks after the April 12th admission deadline.

The graduate business school has 39 full-time faculty members, of whom 95% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 27 part-time faculty members, all of whom hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class numbers around 52 students.

Placement Services

The school has a rather extensive placement service that is available to both current students and alumni for an unlimited amount of time after they receive their degree. These services include position referrals, a career management library, an alumni resume referral service, as well as extensive online job listings.
