The Facts

Henderson State University is a rather small, public institution located in the town of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate enrollment of over 3,430 students. The university's graduate business program, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 40 graduate business students. Approximately 88% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of about 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 26, however, ages range from 21 to 51. Approximately 15% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 2% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The university's graduate business program is perhaps best known for its emphasis on teaching practical skills for future managers. The school offers a graduate business degree in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), as well as several interdisciplinary programs and cross-registration opportunities. The school also offers its students internship and work-study opportunities throughout the community. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of management, finance, strategy, marketing, strategic information systems, as well as financial management.

Admission to the university's graduate business program is not particularly competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 37 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 35 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 29 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 2.7, as well as an average GMAT score of about 460. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.5, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 400. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall, winter, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The university's graduate business program has 20 full-time faculty members, of whom 70% hold a doctorate degree; there are no part-time faculty members. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 14 students, and most faculty members teach an average of about 9 credit hours at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather limited placement services as most students are already fully employed when they enroll. The limited services that are available are available to both current students as well alumni for an unlimited amount of time after receiving their degrees. The services include career counseling, resume referral, as well as online job listings.

What's Good

"All the professors are here full time, which makes it easier to get in touch with them outside of class."

"The program is nice and small, and most of the classes are under 14 students, so its easy to have discussions."

"The administration is great at getting your questions answered."

What's Bad

"Because there are so few people in the program, things can get pretty intense and stressful."

"There are some professors who just pile the work on because they assume their class is the only you've got."

"It would be nice if we were in more of an urban center in terms of networking and internships."
