The Facts

Hofstra University is a rather large, private institution located in the town of Hampstead, New York, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 13,508 students. The graduate Frank G. Zarb School of Business, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 457 graduate business students. Approximately 95% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 27, however, ages range from 21 all the way up to 60. Approximately 5% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 2% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on the real-world application of theory, as well as for its various research and simulation projects. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science (MA), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), as well as joint degrees in law (JD/MBA), and tax (MS/JD). The school also offers plenty of work-study and internship opportunities, as well as marketing research groups, and foreign exchange programs with 6 countries. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of finance, marketing, as well as management.

Admission to Hofstra University's graduate Frank G. Zarb School of Business is quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 314 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 223 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 148 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.2, as well as an average GMAT score of about 570. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.75, as well as minimum GMAT score of at least 450. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall, winter, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The school has 39 full-time faculty members, 95% of whom hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 8 part-time faculty members, of whom 38% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class numbers around 28 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 6 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services available to both current students and alumni. Some of these services include job search strategy coaching, resume reviews, online job listings, a career resource library, as well as individualized career counseling. Last year, 35 companies were actively recruiting on campus, 70% of which were national corporations. The majors most in demand by these companies included accounting, tax, finance, as well as marketing. The average starting salary of last year's graduating class was around $77,077, however, it ranged from $40,000 to $150,000. Over 76% of the same class were able to find jobs within three months of obtaining their graduate degrees.

What's Good

"The classes are nice and small which makes it very easy to do group simulations and marketing studies."

"The professors obviously really love this school, and their dedication shows by the way they treat their students."

"There are some excellent internships available, and they can often lead to more connections after graduating."

What's Bad

"There isn't a whole lot of financial aid available to us, and this school isn't cheap."

"It would be nice if we were a bit closer to an urban area in terms of the convenience of internships."

"Housing is insanely expensive at the university. It's better to find off-campus lodging in my opinion."
